Rocky Lewis named head football coach at East Columbus; Sharks lose & more

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) --- Rocky Lewis has been named the head football coach at East Columbus High School. Lewis is slated to make it official on Thursday morning in Lake Waccamaw where he'll be signing his contract with the school. Lewis won a state football championship as the quarterback of the Clinton Dark Horses. He's a Clinton High graduate and a graduate of East Carolina University as well. Lewis previously served as an assistant football coach at Appalachian State University and North Carolina A&T. Rocky Lewis, whose been in private sector the last few years, is the son of current Clinton head football coach Bob Lewis.

Rocky Lewis replaces Chris Haney who resigned as the head football coach at East Columbus High School after one season. Under Haney the Gators won five games. That includes a state playoff victory in the first round against North Edgecombe. Prior to coaching at East Columbus Haney was an assistant coach at Ashley High School and New Hanover High School. Haney has decided to go back to Ashley High. He'll be the Screaming Eagles offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Propst.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- Game 4 of the American Legion baseball playoff series between Wilmington Post 10 and Whiteville Post 137 is a washout. Whiteville will now host Wilmington in game 4 of the best of 5 series on Thursday at Legion Stadium in Whiteville. Wilmington leads the series 2 games to 1.

WILSON, NC (SHARKS RELEASE) --- The Sharks were handed a loss at the hands of the Tobacconists at their home in Wilson at Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night by a score of 6-3. Wilmington's starting arm, John Parke, went six complete innings, allowing five hits and three runs, despite just one being earned.
The Sharks picked up their first run in the top of the second inning on a solo shot off the big bat of Cam McRae, his first round-tripper of the year. McRae, the clubhouse leader in terms of batting average, now has seven extra base hits on the season for the Wilmington Sharks.
Two runs came across in the sixth for the Tobs after a run scored on a three throwing error on an error by the pitcher Parke, as well as an RBI infield single by Ben Schmucker. The RBI was Schmucker's 28th of the year, putting him in third place in the Coastal Plain League.
Wilmington would close the gap in the sixth on a two strike single by Nate Moorhouse, who was moved over to third on a double that one hopped the fence to right-center field. Cam McRae would single into the hole between short and third to score Moorhouse.
Wilson would add three insurance runs in the seventh off Pat Toohers following two hits and two Sharks fielding errors, each of which by Steven Linkous at third base. Linkous was back at the hot corner after playing center field for two weeks.
In the eighth, Montville would draw a two out walk and another infield single by Cam McRae. McRae finished the evening 3-4 with a homerun and two RBIs.Montville would steal third base, becoming a perfect six for six on steal attempts on the season. Sam Foy would pick up an RBI in the frame to make the score 6-3.
The Sharks will have a doubleheader at home against the Morehead City Marlins on Thursday, featuring dollar beers during each of the seven inning games at the Shark Tank.

WILMINGTON, NC (HAMMERHEADS) -- Wilmington Hammerheads FC forward Sunny Jane will return to his country of Lesotho to represent the Lesotho National Team as they compete in the third round qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations against the Senior National Team of Kenya on July 20, 2014. They will play again on August 3, 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Jane will return to Wilmington upon completion of the second match.

The forward traveled to Lesotho after being called up to play for Lesotho's national team back in June where they claimed a 2-1 aggregate win over Liberia with their second-leg 2-0 home victory in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- UNCW head men's golf coach Matt Clark has announced his program's schedule for the 2014-15 season, which includes trips to Hawaii and Oregon while also hosting the annual Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall.

"This season's schedule will again be a competitive one that will help us prepare for the Colonial Athletic Association championship and NCAA Regional play," said Clark, who enters his seventh season at the lead of the Seahawk men's golf program.

UNCW opens the season with at the UNC Intercollegiate on Sept. 12-14. The Seahawks will play five tournaments during the fall portion of the season including the Royal Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, hosted by Hawaii on the island of Maui (Nov. 7-9).

The Seahawks open the spring portion of the schedule on Mar. 13-15, 2015, with the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon. UNCW will follow up that tournament with the Seahawk Intercollegiate on Mar. 29-30. St. James, N.C., will serve as host site for the CAA championship on Apr. 24-26.

PINEHURST, NC (WWAY) -- Former UNCW golfer Lori Beth Adams is tied for 10th place at the 112th Women's North & South Amateur in Pinehurst after two qualifying rounds. If Adams finishes in the top 16 overall she'll advance to the match play portion of the event. Match play begins on Friday at Pinehurst #8.
